Here’s a cool one in the works at Warner Bros: Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in and produce I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, via her Fifty-Fifty Films.
The movie project is based on a Reddit short story by Joe Cote. Fifty-Fifty notched Oscar-winning Forrest Gump and Dune scribe Eric Roth to adapt it.
In the short story, a drifter impersonates a missing girl to rob the girl’s family — only to realize she’s made a terrible mistake.
Vertigo’s Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe at Underground are attached to produce.
Sweeney, the White Lotus and Euphoria star, is taking a bigger hand in producing the projects she stars in. She was an executive producer on Sony’s 2023 romantic comedy hit Anyone But You ($220.3 million global box office gross and $103M net profit after ancillaries), and she shepherded the nun horror movie Immaculate which world premiered at last year’s SXSW. Neon released that pic.
Upcoming, Sweeney is an EP on Paul Feig’s The Housemaid in which she stars opposite Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar for the thriller opening on Christmas Day. In that feature take of the Freida McFadden novel, Sweeney plays Millie, a struggling woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew (Sklenar), an upscale, wealthy couple. She soon learns the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.
Sweeney is starring and producing Scandalous! in which she stars as Kim Novak. Colman Domingo is making his directorial debut with that Miramax project, which follows the clandestine love affair between Novak and singer-dancer and movie star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957.
Sweeney is also producing and headlining David Michôd’s biopic of female boxer Christy Martin.
Next up for Sweeney is Apple’s Echo Valley with Juliane Moore, Kyle MacLachlan and Domhnall Gleeson.
Sweeney is repped by Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox. Roth is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.
EXCLUSIVE: A24 and Picturestart are teaming on The Masque of the Red Death, a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, and are in negotiations with Sydney Sweeney to star. Charlie Polinger is writing and directing, with A24 handling domestic distribution. Polinger will also executive produce alongside Lucy McKendrick.
The original Poe short story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. Details behind this new take are being kept under wraps. Sources say the film will shoot this year.
Sweeney, the Euphoria and White Lotus star, had herself a busy 2024 that included the hit rom-com Anyone But You and the Neon horror thriller Immaculate. She also had the HBO pic Reality, which earned her a Critics Choice Award. She is currently filming the Lionsgate adaptation of the novel The Housemaid. She is repped by Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
Playwright, director, and auteur Polinger is currently in post on The Plague, which was made independently and stars Joel Edgerton. The film will be produced by Spooky Pictures and Lizzie Shapiro and financed by Imagenation. He is represented by UTA, Anonymous Content, and Kim Jaime at Jackoway Austen.
EXCLUSIVE: Colman Domingo will make his directorial debut in Scandalous, a fast-tracked Miramax drama about the clandestine love affair between film star Kim Novak and singer/dancer and film star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957. Sydney Sweeney will play Novak, and David Jonsson will play Davis.
Plan is to shoot the film — imagine a movie about classic Hollywood being shot in Los Angeles — when Domingo and Sweeney complete Season 3 of the HBO series Euphoria.
Much the way she did with the sleeper hit Anyone But You, Sweeney was active in putting this one together and she will be a producer along with Tani Cohen and Bobby Rock, with Jon Levin exec producing. Matthew Fantaci wrote the script.
Before he became Miramax CEO, Jon Glickman originated the project at Panoramic, and remained high on it. Novak, star of Vertigo, and Rat Pack member Davis were at the peak of star power when they met while guests on The Steve Allen Show. They fell hard for each other, but as rumors spread, the rampant racism in America threatened to derail their careers. Novak experience the ire of Harry Cohn, the Columbia Pictures chief who had the actress under contract. Their covert affair became big news when a Chicago gossip columnist in early 1958 wrote a detailed account of their relationship, including their plans to marry. This despite their denials. Davis nine days later married a Black chorus girl named Loray White.
Domingo is coming off acclaimed turns in Rustin and Sing Sing, and he’s also working on a film about Nat King Cole that he would star in and direct. He has directed TV in the past and he’s currently in production on Netflix and Tina Fey’s The Four Seasons and he has the Netflix limited series The Madness. He also plays Joe Jackson in the Michael Jackson biopic Michael.
Lights Out: Nat King Cole, which Domingo wrote with director Patricia McGregor, will premiere at New York Theater Workshop in the spring, after it premiered at the Geffen Theater in 2019.
Domingo is repped by WME and Liebman Entertainment, Sweeney by Paradigm. CAA and United Agents rep Jonsson, who stars in Industry and is coming off Alien: Romulus and is next starring in the Francis Lawrence-directed The Long Walk, based on the Stephen King novel.

In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple. She soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.
